Floating wind reaches commercial scale in the North Sea

Floating offshore wind has crossed a defining threshold this year, with several developers confirming final investment decisions on arrays exceeding 500 MW in waters previously considered too deep for fixed-bottom turbines.

The shift opens vast new areas of the North Sea, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean to development, and is drawing a wave of port investment to support the assembly of floating platforms onshore.

Industry leaders meeting through Energy at Sea point to supply-chain readiness and grid connection timelines as the two factors that will determine how quickly the sector scales over the next decade.
